Rental Requirements
What you need to rent a motorbike in Japan as a New Zealand visitor.
International Driving Permit
New Zealand licence holders require an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued in NZ before departure. Available from the AA — we recommend getting this 4+ weeks ahead.
NZ Motorcycle Licence
A full NZ motorcycle endorsement is required. Restricted licence holders should contact us to discuss options before booking.
Rental Insurance
All partner shops include compulsory third-party insurance. We strongly recommend adding comprehensive cover — ask us about our recommended travel insurance partners.
Credit Card Bond
Partner shops require a credit card security bond (typically ¥50,000–¥150,000 depending on bike). No cash bonds accepted.
